What Kind of Lawyer of You?

What Kind of Lawyer of You?

Lawyers come in all different shapes and sizes. When they meet lawyers at a party, people tend to say: "can you help me with my mother's will?", or "how do I beat this speeding ticket?" - looking for a spot of free advice. But, in reality, most lawyers delve deep into their area of specialisation, and the chances are they have no more knowledge of the law pertaining to Aunt Ethel's will than you do.

When I was a pupil barrister I was strongly advised by my pupil masters to read the tabloid press, if only to keep up with what clients (especially criminal ones) were reading. I did not read the tabloids, and worst of all I never supported a football team, which left me incapable of any kind of footie-related conversation. When clients ask "what firm are you with?" - they generally don't mean law.
