Everyone hates paying taxes but for barristers it's worse than most of the rest of us. Combine what can be a big income with relatively low expenses and you have a potentially enormous cheque to write at year's end to the Inland Revenue.

What legitimate expenses can barristers offset against their profits? Wigs and gowns? Fancy dress? Trouble is, these expenses tend to be once-in-a-career costs and they are all borne up front in the first year. Overall, this is an expensive time of year for The Bar.
