How Queen's Counsel Teamed Up with Baby Barista
A couple of years ago I was working at Cinesite on a feature film when I got a call from Tim Kevan, the barrister and writer who started the super-popular Baby Barista blog. Tim was a fan of Queen's Counsel and was hoping I might draw some illustrations for his Baby B characters - which at the time existed only in his imagination.
Tim asked me if I knew of and read Baby B and I said well, yes...and no. The thing is, I said, if I read your blog I know I won't be able to stop myself from pinching your ideas. After all, we're both mining the same seam of satire, making fun of lawyers. So, to keep myself honest, I hadn't read it.
Tim laughed and said I should read it - he'd take the risk. So I started sketching out his characters. Tim would describe each character and I would send him a series of scribbles; and he would send them back , saying yes to this one, or no to that one...too fat, too thin, too posh, too geeky - until we got it just right.
It was huge fun, and I was proud to see Bloomsbury embrace the drawings and include them in Tim's second Baby B book Law and Peace. It is a hugely entertaining read, and highly recommended.
